This Saturday afternoon, more than 30 museums and galleries around the Mid-Wilshire area will participate in ArtWalk, a free self-guided tour intended to celebrate the neighborhood's unique art scene.
Starting 8:15 p.m., Los Angeles County Museum Of Art will host the ArtWalk After Party at the newly opened BP Grand Entrance. General admission is $40 and includes complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, as well as a performance.
The Artwalk will take place Saturday May 17, 2008 from 12pm-11pm.
My Thoughts:
I think that this Artwalk idea is great. It is a good way to promote various art forms. It is kind of pricey, but I think it will be worth the money.

Poetry Slam At CSULB
University Players from Cal State Long Beach are currently presenting Out Loud Slam Poetry.
It is An original theatrical experience conceived by Joanne Gordon and posse of Slam Poets.
The last show of the CSULB University Players season is Out Loud: Slam Poetry, an original explosion of poetry. (Think jazz that uses words rather than notes.) The piece will run in the re-imagined Players Theatre on the CSULB campus from May 2nd to May 17th.
Gordon, critically lauded for her work with Charles Bukowski’s material in 2005, describes this piece as "Thirty-two undergrads squirting adrenaline at the walls." She goes on to say, "These are authentic voices with a love of the spoken word, infused with a street rhythm and the vernacular of now. These are the faces of the future."
Performances are Tuesday through Thursday at 7 P.M., and Friday and Saturday at 8 P.M, with a matinee on Saturday May 17th at 2 P.M. The Players Theatre is located in the Theatre Arts Building on the south end of the CSULB campus, near 7th Street and West Campus Drive.

Student Exhibition at CSULB
The University Art Museum and Cal State Long Beach Department of Art present Insights 2008: the Annual Student Exhibition.
The exhibition will be held May 8-June 1. The artists reception will be held on Thursday, May 8 from 6-8pm.
The admission for this event is $4 and it's free for UAM members and those with CSULB ID.
The exhibition highlights work by undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines including ceramics, drawing and painting, fiber, graphic design, illustration, new genre, metal, photography, printmaking, and wood.
My Thoughts:
This exhibition is a great way for CSULB students to showcase their artwork to other students, staff, the general public and professionals. I also think that incoming freshman that desire to become an art major should definitely attend this show and I think that CSULB students should attend the show as well to show support to their fellow students.

It is regularly the top contributer to the annual CSU Media Festival, and this past year our students were, once again, frequently in the winner’s circle, with multiple first, second and third place wins.
They won in diverse categories such as: Music Video, Narrative Film, Experimental and Documentary.
In support of our Film and Electronic Arts Department, Sony sponsored a special preview of Ghost Rider—written and directed by CSULB alumnus Mark Steven Johnson held on the CSULB campus. It was part of the first annual Sony Premiere Film Festival.
My Thoughts:
I think that Cal State Long Beach students are excelling especially in the art department. I also think that it is excellent that CSULB's Film and Electronic Arts department has one of the strongest training programs in the nation. University Art Museum receives gifts
The University Art Museum at Cal State Long Beach received a gift of 152 photographs by Andy Warhol
These photos include original polaroids and silver gelatin prints produced by Andy Warhol from 1974 through 1985. They also include portraits of celebrities such as Dennis Hopper, O.J. Simpson, Lana Turner and Issey Miyake. Candid photographs of the New York street and party scene, as well as many pictures of Warhol's friends and Factory regulars were also given to the museum.
"This incredible gift from the Warhol Foundation allows us to build upon the museum's wonderful pop art legacy and give future scholars and students the chance to explore the creative process behind one of the 20th century's true artistic minds," said UAM Director Christopher Scoates. "We look forward to unveiling this new group of photographs to the general public later this year."
My Thoughts:

April Arts at CSULB
Cal State Long Beach's art department is offering numerous programs in the month of April. The Opera Institute at CSULB will be performing L'Orfeo, which will be sung in Italian with English subtitles. The Dance department is putting on a Spring showcase called momentum, its starts April 30 and it will go on until May 3. The showcase will be held in the Martha Knoebel Dance Theater on CSULB's campus.
The art department is also having a Inaugural Cole Conservatory Festival, which will be held May 2-12. This festival includes 10 days of musical performances from the newly designated Bob Cole Conservatory of Music.
My Thoughts:
I think that the art department is offering a wide variety of programs this month, and I know that the students and teachers spent countless hours preparing for all of these functions. So I encourage everyone to at least attend one of the art functions going on this month. Also the prices are affordable, and you might learn something new.

Donation for Music
Cal State Long Beach received the largest donation in University history of $16.4 million from Bob Cole Trust to provide scholarships for student musicians, said Toni Beron of CSULB news and events.
"In establishing the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, we are doing more than recognizing a man for his extraordinary generosity to our university," said CSULB President F. King Alexander. "This conservatory will forever honor a Long Beach man who looked to the promising futures of students at our university and wanted to help them succeed."
My Thoughts:
I think that this donation will have a great impact on up and coming musicians and it will create more opportunities for them. It would be nice to have more individuals willing give from their hearts to art students who dedicate so much time to their work.

Students create Airport Sign
Four students from Cal State Long Beach are competing in designing a welcome sign for the Long Beach Airport.
Erin Clark, Janice Fong, David Ly and Ryan Milner are the four students who will have their creations judged by airport officials and the winner will have their artwork re-constructed to sit at the end of one of the runways at the airport.
My Thoughts:
I think that it is a great opportunity for our art department to show its skill and creativity. I also think that it is wonderful that our school was chosen to represent their art at Long Beach Airport.

Iraq Fashion
The United States is known for its fashion designs to be worn by beautiful models that are very thin. In Iraq, its not about the models weight or beauty, it's about the garments beauty and the meaning of the design.
" I talked to a number of the models here and I asked them what they thought about the models in the U.S., the fact that they get so wrapped up in body image, eating disorders, and revealing clothes. There reaction was so humbling, they said here in Iraq it's not about the beauty of the women, its about the beauty of the dress, said Kira Phillips of CNN.
Even though our countries are at war with each other, Iraq models still have the time and patience to appreciate the art, culture, and history of the designer clothing. These models are from Baghdad, and most of what they represent when they are modeling can be very dangerous, ""for models like 24-yr-old Huda Fie yak every stroke of make-up, every dress she dawns, death threats are apart of this wardrobe. " We get so many threatening letters saying this is your last day. There are many Islamics here and many Islamic groups who wan to destroy us, they look at our success as a failure to them, said Fie yak." The Arts-Photography
My Thoughts:
Photos capture art whether the scene is active or still. Behind the photos are the photographers who search for what they think is art.
Photographers can take what people think are dull images and turn them into an image of beauty. Lee Miller was a photographer from the 1920s through the late 1940s. Her famous picture she ever made is was, a dead SS officer floating in a canal at Dachau in 1945, caught as if about to slip into another dimension, said Richard B. Woodward from the Wall Street Journal."
Finding art through photography can be difficult at times and it requires patience. Some photographers may have to take a shot over and over again until they take the perfect picture, and that's when it becomes art.

Dancing Art
San Francisco's ballet began in 1933, it was known as the Opera Ballet, said Robert Greskovic from the Wall Street Journal. They are famous for their annual performance of "The Nutcracker". This ballet company has been around for 75 years, and they currently have 78 members on their team.
Surprised by the San Francisco Ballet's recent show, Greskovic states "The charming result, which I'd never seen live before, and which has music by Virgil Thomson and a libretto by Lincoln Kirstein, reveals a strong underpinning of athletic ballet moves, especially in the role of Mac, the guileless gas-station attendant originally portrayed by the god-like Christensen himself. Too often today, realism is likely to weigh down a ballet of similar aims, with the choreographer all but neglecting the very steps that ballet dancers practice and perfect."

Fashion as Art
The New York fashion week, which is twice a year displayed many different types of clothing designed for all weather conditions. Celebrity designers Donna Karan, Tracy Reese, Malo, Badgley Mischka, Peter Som and Nanette Lepore all took part in displaying there new designs in New York. "Designers often trot out collections inspired by popular culture, art and history, said Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan from the Wall Street Journal."
Fashion week will also feature a return to feminine, full 1950s-style circle skirts and early '60s-style tailored sheath dresses and suits; deep and vibrant colors ranging from peacock blue to bright, hot pinks; and multicultural looks with bohemian prints, which high-end labels such as Oscar de la Renta and 6267 had begun showing for spring 2008, said Lien.
The vice president and women's fashion director for Saks Fifth Avenue, Michael Fink got an early look at several fall collections before New York's fashion week began and praised what he saw. "It's a season where we're seeing people really think about the weather and that's important, Mr. Fink says. These clothes are delivering in July and it's not getting cold until October now."

The definition of art according to dictionary.com is the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles of what is beautiful, appealing or of more than ordinary significance.
My Thoughts:
Art is a noun, which is a person, place or thing. It can be found in every day of life whether people are aware or unaware of its presence. Most people think of art as drawing or painting, but it is so much more than that.
Art can be expressed in different ways, such as movement, speech, rhythm and can be presented in many other ways as well. We should all look for and be more aware of the art around us daily.
